Road Safety & Security

The Jamaica Gasolene Retailers Association involvement with road safety dates back to 1969.  Since then each year we engage in programmes to educate all users of our roads.  In 1969 when we got involved in road safety activities the statistics indicated that majority of the accidents were as a result of defective motor vehicles.

In an effort to reduce motor vehicles crashes in 1986 the JGRA launched a free 51 point motor vehicle inspection at all member service station for one week.

In 1987 the programme was expanded and the entire month of May was observed as “Safety Inspection Month”.  The programme continued with the same format for another two years and each year it gained wider acceptance by the public.

The growing problems, including the alarming increase in the number of road facilities each year, spurred the JGRA to widen its activities, in an attempt to contribute to action which would remedy this situation.  Thus, in 1990, May was for the first time, observed as “Road Safety Month” with the aim of promoting safety awareness among all road users.
